Restaurants in Trnava
Trnava has plenty of options for both a quick lunch and a leisurely dinner. Alongside traditional Slovak cuisine, you will find restaurants specialising in steaks, pizza, burgers, pasta, Asian dishes and modern European food. Many are in the historic centre, while others are near the station or in larger commercial areas of the city.
When choosing a restaurant, it helps to distinguish between a special dinner, tasting local specialities and a casual meal with family or friends. The following three recommendations cover these different experiences.
Refined dining and an elegant setting
For a dinner for two, a business meeting or a celebration, consider restaurants that focus on quality ingredients, attentive service and a pleasant atmosphere. In Trnava, some of these venues occupy historic townhouses, where the old town provides an additional backdrop to the dining experience.
Forhaus
Forhaus restaurant is located on Kapitulská Street in the historic centre, close to St Nicholas Square and the basilica. It is especially known for steaks and meat cooked over charcoal on a Josper grill, but the menu also includes fish, pasta, risotto, Slovak dishes and desserts. Its elegant interior is complemented by a bar and rooftop terrace overlooking historic Trnava. It is a good choice for a romantic dinner, a social occasion or a more refined experience than a typical bistro.
Traditional Slovak cuisine
For international visitors, trying Slovak food can be just as interesting as exploring historical sights. One of the country’s best-known dishes is bryndzové halušky, potato dumplings with sheep’s cheese. You do not have to visit a countryside restaurant to experience these flavours, though: there is an excellent option right in the city centre.
Iná haluška
Iná haluška on Františkánska Street specialises in Slovak potato dumplings in both traditional and creative versions. You can try classic bryndzové halušky, strapačky with sauerkraut or more modern combinations with different sauces and toppings. This informal venue is ideal for a substantial lunch or dinner without a long sit-down meal, particularly for visitors who want to discover a typical Slovak dish while walking around the historic centre.
International cuisine and casual dining
If you are travelling with children or a larger group, restaurants with an extensive menu can be particularly convenient. One person may want pizza, another a burger or pasta, while everyone else can choose something different. These places are also useful for a quicker meal between sightseeing stops.
Pizza Exxpres
Pizza Exxpres on Dohnányho Street is an informal restaurant and pizzeria near the railway and bus stations. Its main speciality is pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven, but the menu is much broader, featuring burgers, pasta, sushi, poke and other dishes. The restaurant also offers a daily lunch menu and delivery. It suits families, groups with different tastes and travellers looking for a meal before departure or after arriving in Trnava.

Bars and nightlife in Trnava
Your evening in Trnava does not have to end with the last stop on a sightseeing tour. The city has pubs serving proper meals, smaller bars and terraces around its squares, and nightclubs with DJs. Where you go depends on whether you want a beer with friends, a cocktail in the centre or to dance until morning.
The greatest concentration of evening venues is in and around the historic centre. Weekend nightlife varies with scheduled events, so always check the programme and opening hours before visiting a club.
A pub with food and a sporting atmosphere
A traditional pub does not have to mean just draught beer and snacks. Some venues combine a bar with a substantial restaurant, serving burgers, ribs, Slovak dishes and lunch menus. They are also good places to meet before a football match or watch sport together on a large screen.
Bokovka
Bokovka pub and restaurant is located in the City Arena complex, directly beneath Anton Malatinský football stadium. It focuses on draught beer, particularly Pilsner Urquell, and has an extensive menu of burgers, ribs, steak tartare, chicken wings and Slovak classics. Its location makes it a useful stop for football supporters as well as groups of friends who want a proper meal with their beer.
A cocktail bar in the historic centre
For a quieter evening for two or a drink with friends, the bars around Trinity Square are a good option. In warmer months, outdoor seating is especially inviting: you can watch the evening atmosphere of the old town and its illuminated landmarks.
Hedon coffee & cocktails
Hedon is located on Trinity Square, right beside the City Tower. Its speciality is creative and classic mixed cocktails prepared with quality ingredients. It is also open during the day, offering coffee, desserts, light snacks and breakfast or brunch options. For tourists, the greatest attraction is its central location: it is a convenient stop after sightseeing or for an evening drink in the heart of Trnava.
Nightclubs and dancing
If you are looking for loud music, DJs and dancing late into the night, explore the club scene. Unlike a regular bar, a nightclub visit usually depends on a specific event, ticket sales and designated opening nights.
APE Club
APE Club on Radlinského Street is one of Trnava’s established nightlife venues. It hosts themed parties, DJ nights and guest performances, with a dance floor, bar facilities and options to reserve a table or VIP area. The club suits people who want to continue their night after an evening in the centre. Check the latest programme, admission price and event rules before visiting; it is not a bar with regular daily opening hours.

Cafés and dessert shops in Trnava
Trnava’s historic centre is also known for its café culture. On Trinity Square and nearby streets, you will find places for morning coffee, a long breakfast, an afternoon dessert or cake after exploring the sights. Some cafés are worth visiting for the buildings they occupy as much as for their refreshments.
We have chosen three distinct experiences: an exceptional café inside a historic monument, a well-established breakfast and brunch spot, and a dessert shop in a recently restored building in the city centre.
A café inside a historic monument
Coffee in Trnava can be part of an architectural experience. Some cafés occupy valuable historic buildings that have been given a new purpose. The combination of cultural heritage, distinctive interiors and a working café makes these visits more than just a short break.
Synagóga Café
Synagóga Café is housed in a former Orthodox synagogue on Haulíkova Street. Its monumental interior, retaining many original architectural details, offers a setting unlike an ordinary coffee shop. It serves coffee, cakes and desserts, and the venue also hosts cultural events, exhibitions and concerts. It is an excellent choice for visitors who want to enjoy coffee while discovering one of Trnava’s more unusual historic buildings.
Breakfast and brunch in the centre
If you prefer a leisurely morning, you can begin your visit with breakfast or brunch in the city centre. Some cafés have their own kitchen, breakfast menus and homemade pastries or cakes alongside their coffee. A good breakfast is a pleasant way to start before visiting the City Tower and historic streets.
Thalmeiner
Thalmeiner café on Trinity Square draws on Trnava’s café traditions from the first half of the twentieth century. It is known for its breakfast menu, homemade cakes and speciality coffee. The interior recalls the city’s historic café culture, while its position on the main square makes it convenient before or after exploring the centre. It is ideal for a slow breakfast, brunch, coffee with friends or a sweet break during the day.
Cake and ice cream in the historic centre
An afternoon walk through historic Trnava can include a stop for ice cream or a traditional cake. For families with children, it is an easy way to break up a day of sightseeing, squares and cultural attractions.
Pracháreň by Elezi
Pracháreň by Elezi opened in July 2026 in the restored historic Pracháreň building near Trinity Square, next to the Ján Palárik Theatre. It continues the tradition of the former local milk bar and offers its own cakes, gingerbread, pastries, ice cream, coffee and homemade lemonades. Combining a familiar landmark, restored architecture and sweet treats, it is an appealing stop for both tourists and families with children.
More places for coffee and sweets: Explore our directory of cafés and dessert shops in Trnava. We will gradually feature more establishments both in and beyond the city centre.
Where to eat in Trnava for different occasions
You do not always need to search for a specific venue by name. Sometimes it matters more whether you want a quick meal, something typically Slovak or a whole evening out. Here are recommendations for different occasions.
A romantic dinner or celebration
For a relaxed meal in elegant surroundings, Forhaus on Kapitulská Street is a good choice. It is particularly suitable for a dinner for two or a special occasion. Booking a table ahead is advisable in the evening and at weekends.
Trying Slovak cuisine while sightseeing
For local flavours, we recommend Iná haluška on Františkánska Street. Bryndzové halušky and strapačky are dishes worth trying at least once during a trip to Slovakia. If you would prefer a wide-ranging menu and relaxed atmosphere, Pizza Exxpres is a practical alternative.
A meal with children or a larger group
The extensive menu at Pizza Exxpres suits groups with different tastes. If you want to combine your outing with a stop for coffee and something sweet, try Pracháreň by Elezi. You will find more family-friendly ideas in our Trnava with kids guide.
Coffee, breakfast or dessert
For a leisurely breakfast or brunch, choose Thalmeiner on Trinity Square. To enjoy coffee in an unusual historic building, visit Synagóga Café. For cakes and ice cream in a recently renovated venue, try Pracháreň by Elezi.
Beer, cocktails or nightlife
For draught beer and a proper meal, we recommend Bokovka by City Arena. If you prefer mixed cocktails and the atmosphere of the main square, try Hedon. For dancing, continue to APE Club, but check the programme for your chosen night first.
Local flavours of Trnava: beer, wine and mead
Trnava’s food and drink experiences go beyond its restaurants, cafés and bars. The city has its own brewing heritage and lies near the important Little Carpathians wine-growing region. During your stay, you can taste local craft beer, quality Slovak wines and mead, which has a long tradition in the area.
Sessler beer from Trnava – tasting at the brewery
To taste beer genuinely brewed in Trnava, visit Sessler brewery on Pri Kalvárii Street. Its history follows the town brewery founded in 1752 and the later malt house developed by Jozef Sessler in the nineteenth century. Today beer is once again brewed here using traditional methods, and visitors can try light and dark lagers, speciality beers and seasonal releases.
Sessler is more than a brewery: it is also a tourist attraction. The restored historic premises include a restaurant serving its own beer and brewery specialities. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the brewery and historic malt house, with tastings included on selected tours. Tours require advance booking and are particularly suitable for smaller groups.
Experience tip: Combine a tasting of Trnava beer with a tour of the production facilities and dinner at the brewery restaurant. You can find current tours, booking conditions and available beers on the official Sessler brewery website.
Wine and mead tastings in and around Trnava
Trnava lies on the edge of the Little Carpathians wine-growing region, one of Slovakia’s most important wine areas. You can discover its winemaking traditions without leaving the city. The well-known Mrva & Stanko winery on Orešianska Street offers guided tastings with expert commentary and opportunities to tour its production facilities and wine cellars. Find more information about tastings on the winery’s website.
The region also has a noteworthy mead-making tradition. In nearby Dolná Krupá, you can visit the Medolandia complex, with the APIMED meadery, a rose garden and mead-tasting opportunities. Another destination is Včelovina in Smolenice, which produces several types of mead and offers guided tastings combined with a production tour. You can combine these visits with historic sights and the nature of the Little Carpathians. Dolná Krupá also has a beautiful manor house, while Smolenice boasts a fairytale castle, Driny Cave and hiking trails. Tastings therefore fit easily into full-day excursions.
Where can you taste mead? Explore the offerings at Medolandia in Dolná Krupá or Včelovina tastings in Smolenice. Group tastings and guided tours generally require advance booking.
Practical tips for visiting restaurants and bars in Trnava
Table reservations and evening visits
At popular restaurants in the centre, it is wise to reserve a table for Friday and Saturday evenings, holidays or major city events. This is especially important for celebrations or dinners with larger groups. At clubs, check the programme and entry rules in advance; reserving a table may work differently from a restaurant.
Lunch menus, breakfast and opening hours
Some restaurants in Trnava offer lunch specials only during certain hours, and the evening menu may differ. Breakfast and brunch dishes may also be unavailable later in the day. Check the current menu and opening hours on the venue’s own website before visiting, particularly on holidays and weekends.
Vegetarian food, allergens and eating with children
Larger restaurants and bistros often have meat-free dishes, but the selection varies. If you have food allergies or require gluten-free or lactose-free meals, always confirm ingredients and preparation options with the staff. For visits with young children, check the availability of high chairs, space for a pushchair and suitable menu items.
Parking and getting around the centre
Many of the featured venues are in or close to the historic centre, allowing you to combine several stops on one walking route. If arriving by car, bear in mind the city’s parking zone rules; not every venue has private parking. For details, see our guide to parking in Trnava.
Discover Trnava beyond its restaurants. After a good meal, take a stroll through the historic centre, explore Trnava’s most interesting sights, attend current events or find accommodation in the city for a longer stay.
